As summer begins to wind down and we look ahead to autumn routines, now is the perfect time to reintroduce a sense of purpose, creativity, and self-expression — especially for young people aged 11–14.
Whether your child is heading back to school or learning at home, my Design & Make Your Sketchbook project is a free, flexible art activity that helps them build confidence, develop creative thinking, and start using a sketchbook in a meaningful way.
It’s hands-on, no-pressure, and ideal for beginners. And yes — it’s completely free to try.
What is Design & Make Your Sketchbook?
This is a step-by-step mini project where your child designs and creates their sketchbook using simple materials you’re likely to already have at home — things like cereal boxes, wrapping paper, string, and paper. There are even instructions on how to upcycle old hardback books into sketchbooks!
But it’s more than just a craft activity. It encourages young artists to:
Think creatively
Make decisions independently
Start a new artistic habit they’re proud to continue
They’ll finish with a personalised sketchbook that feels truly theirs, the perfect space to store drawings, ideas, thoughts, and experiments.
What is a sketchbook used for?
If you're new to art learning at home, you might wonder what to do with a sketchbook. A sketchbook isn’t just for “good” drawings. It’s a place to:
Try out new art techniques
Make mistakes (and learn from them!)
Explore ideas and emotions
Practise without judgement
For young people aged 11–14, this can be incredibly powerful. It becomes a private, creative space, away from assessments, screens, or social media.
Why making your sketchbook matters
Most sketchbooks are bought in a shop, but when your child makes their own, something shifts.
They feel ownership. They get excited. And they’re far more likely to keep using it. That’s why I begin many of my online projects with this activity — it builds creative confidence from the very first page.
What to draw in a sketchbook (and how to get started)
Once the book is built, many children ask: “What should I draw in it?”
That’s where the Sketchbook Challenge comes in. Inside the Arts Instruct membership, I offer four weeks of:
Creative sketchbook ideas to spark imagination
Optional art prompts and themed tasks
A structure that supports independence
Whether your child is into fashion design, illustration, surrealism, or just enjoys doodling, this is a safe space to explore their interests.
Why this challenge is perfect for 11–14 year olds
This age group often feels stuck between childhood crafts and more serious “art” — and that can be intimidating. The Design & Make Your Sketchbook and the extended Sketchbook Challenge are designed with this in mind:
They’re age-appropriate (no childlike themes)
They support individuality and voice
They work whether your child is highly creative or just curious
They include links to inspiring artists
They suit both home learners and school-goers
What’s included in the free project?
When you join, you’ll get:
Short, easy-to-follow video lessons
Printable guides with clear steps and prompts
Encouragement to customise and personalise
Guidance on materials — use what you have! Cardboard, paper, tape, and imagination are more than enough.

How does this help build confidence?
Creative projects like this are about so much more than making “nice” pages. They teach young people how to:
Try new things
Tolerate mistakes
Solve problems
Think differently
In short, it’s one of the best confidence-building activities I know, especially for tweens who are still figuring things out. When I first introduced this challenge in the classroom, I saw excitement, ownership, creativity, and pride. Students chose how their work looked and felt. That sense of choice mattered.
Ready to get started?
The Design & Make Your Sketchbook project is a simple, fun way to help your child reconnect with their creativity, no stress, no mess, no pressure. Whether they’re a budding artist or just need something positive to focus on, this free project is a brilliant place to begin.
